By Brit Paris, GSA President
On September 3rd the GSA kicked off the new school year by marching in the Calgary Pride Parade and officially launching the new GSA2 (Graduate Students’ Association Gay-Straight Alliance) committee! This was a fantastic start to the new school year, filled with energy as the LGBTQ+ community and their allies joined together in a common purpose. As I walked the parade route I was filled with emotion for my city, a city in which I was born and grew up in, and later chose to return to because of this spirit. The number of people lining the streets to support the LGBTQ+ community was overwhelming, and far outnumbered those who chose to use the occasion to spread hate.
I want to build on this occasion to welcome new and returning graduate students to the UCalgary graduate student community. For those new to our community, I am so excited for you to see all that UCalgary holds for you! For those returning, I want to remind you that this is a place where you can be yourself and where you will find allies to support you. For all of you, the UCalgary graduate student community is your community, you belong here and we are here for you when you feel like you don’t (we all know how real imposter syndrome is). My hope for you this school year is that you will find time to get involved in this community and make it your own. Graduate school is so much more than your classes and research, I hope you take the time to discover that.
Start the school year strong by building your community at GSA events. Bring your lab mates, classmates, and colleagues to the following September events:
GSA AGM – September 26th (5:30pm in the LDL – see your email for details)
I look forward to meeting you there!
