As the temperatures cool and we’re inundated with back to school advertisements (is it really the most wonderful time of the year?) I encourage you to take a moment to reflect on what brought or brings you to graduate school.
If this is your first year, welcome! We’re so excited for you to join the UCalgary grad student community. Take a minute to think, what are your goals? What do you hope to accomplish in your time here?
If you’re returning, welcome back! We’re so happy to have you back on campus. What challenges did you experience last year? What do you plan to do differently? Take some time to set some goals for this year and break them down into a timeline.
There’s a tangible excitement in the air every September as new and returning students find their way. I hope you join in that excitement and experience all that UCalgary and the GSA have to offer you. Meet new people through the UCalgary Meetup, develop your teaching skills with the new graduate teaching certificate, or bring your classmates to a GSA event.
If you’re looking for a way to get involved, give back, and build your CV all at the same time, register for the GSA’s Volunteer Recruitment Program.
Whatever your goals, I look forward to seeing what we as a graduate student community can accomplish this year. Graduate school does not have to be isolating, we’re all in this together.
Do you have an idea for a new student club or an awesome event? Please share it with us.
Are you having trouble with your supervisor or a course instructor? Talk to us and we can connect you to services on campus that can help you through an academic crisis.
Looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you at our next event!
