On Tuesday, April 30th, the Graduate Student Associations of both the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta released this open letter, calling upon the Provincial Government to rescind Bill 18 – the Provincial Priorities Act and consult with post-secondary stakeholders on the best way of improving student lives. This letter was co-signed by James Steele and A.C. Cameron, the outgoing President and Vice President-External of UCGSA.
The Provincial Priorities Act leaves the door open for the provincial government to interfere in the grant allocation process, and as we express in our letter, this will have catastrophic consequences for Alberta as a whole. We have implored the Minister of Advanced Education and the Premier to meet with us to discuss this bill, and will keep you–our members–updated on any further developments.
For questions on Bill 18, its impact on graduate students, or on the open letter itself, please reach out to the Advocacy Team.
