Your Labour Relations Committee

About the Labour Relations Committee

As prescribed by the Alberta Labour Code and the Post-Secondary Learning Act, the GSA must function as a trade union for Academically Employed Graduate Students.  The Labour Relations Committee (LRC), chaired by the GSA AVP Labour, exists to carry out this function.  The LRC represents, supports, and educates Academically Employed Graduate Students at the University of Calgary. This includes but is not limited to collective agreement negotiations, the handling of disputes with employers, and advocating for a high standard of graduate student employment.

If you have any questions or concerns about your working conditions or the Collective Agreement, contact lrc.gsa@ucalgary.ca

Keira Gunn

Keira Gunn
Chair
PhD Candidate in Mathematics
keira.gunn1@ucalgary.ca

Keira grew up in Hamilton, Ontario and moved to BC in 2009 to complete a Master's degree in Mathematics at UBC.  She taught math at colleges in the Lower Mainland for nearly a decade before moving to Calgary to pursue a Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics at UCalgary.  Growing up, Keira's father was a member of United Steelworkers and she experienced the strength and sacrifices of collective bargaining first-hand from various strikes and lockouts throughout her childhood. Labour rights and protections were a regular point of discussion in her household and she is extremely passionate about defending them.

In her spare time, Keira enjoys jigsaw puzzles, videogames, ice hockey, and coddling her 17 year-old cat.

Hunter Yaworski

Hunter Yaworski
Vice Chair Internal
MA Student in Geography
hunter.yaworski@ucalgary.ca

Hunter is a Master of Arts student in Geography, studying the influence of the oil and gas industry in Alberta on environmental regulation. Hunter also completed a BSc in Geography and Anthropology at the University of Calgary. Early on in his undergraduate degree, Hunter became involved in various political and student organizations and communities. This includes a constituency association in Calgary Varsity, various student clubs, and the Faculty of Arts Student association. Hunter has also been involved in community activism across the city, including working as an organizer for Community Solidarity YYC. For fun, Hunter enjoys playing Warhammer 40k, Dungeons and Dragons, and playing with his heavy metal band.

Hunter wanted to join the LRC as VC Internal because he felt that his experience as an activist would help the LRC advocate for students, and because he sees the LRC as a real avenue for positive and tangible change for the graduate student body as a whole. Further, he supports the incredibly important and impactful role union mobilizing and organizing can have on improving the lives of its workers.

Brittany Lindsay

Brittany Lindsay
Vice Chair Health & Safety
Arts Representative
PhD Candidate in Psychology
bllindsa@ucalgary.ca

Brittany is a Ph.D. candidate in Experimental Social Psychology, and her research primarily focuses on mental illness and suicide stigma reduction, as well as mental health promotion in the postsecondary setting. She completed degrees in both Psychology (M.Sc., B.A.) and Mathematics (B.Sc.) at UCalgary, and has been a student and/or staff here since 2012! When she isn’t working on academics, she likes to go on little hikes with her family (partner Adam and rescue dog Mickey), cook and bake gluten-free (she is celiac), and listen to true crime podcasts.

Brittany is very passionate about mental health promotion, as well as teaching and learning, so becoming VC Health and Safety representing TAs and RAs was a natural fit for her skills and interests. The term "Health and Safety" includes physical health and safety in our workplaces, but also psychological health and safety, which can easily be overlooked. As VC Health and Safety, she aims to prioritize ALL health and safety, and help build a healthier workplace for our workers.

Sara H. Tamrin

Sara H. Tamrin
Vice Chair EDI/International
PhD Candidate in Biomedical Engineering
sara.hassanpourtamri@ucalgary.ca

Sara is a Ph.D. candidate in Biomedical Engineering, and the core of her research is focused on the development and translation of novel technologies for non-invasive diagnostic platforms. She has been a lead researcher in a couple of collaborative projects defined at the interface of mechanical, electrical and biomedical engineering while supporting the inclusion of diverse research team members by providing a welcoming and inclusive space in the lab to recruit and retain women students and racial/ethnic minorities. Seeking to promote Indigenous engagement in engineering, she began collaborating with the Schulich Indigenous Pathways Program at UCalgary to encourage Indigenous Peoples who are interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to study at the Schulich School of Engineering. She is presently serving as an executive team member of the Biomedical Engineering EDI committee at UCalgary, and has had an active role in the development of the EDI action plan and the key metrics assessing the EDI activities in the department.  When she is not in the lab, she enjoys cooking, sewing, painting, and biking for fun.

As a member of the Labour Relations Committee, she is committed to supporting and building a sustainable EDI infrastructure that is positioned to dismantle systematic discrimination and oppression within the community of academically employed graduate students. In support of EDI efforts tied up with different targeting areas of research/teaching/community, she plans to develop a framework of priorities and initiatives that reflects the EDI-related pain points for the targeting areas and promote an inclusive and diverse community for academically employed graduate students.

 Sabit Ibn Ali Khan

Sabit Ibn Ali Khan
Vice Chair Communications
PhD in Electrical and Software Engineering
sabitibnali.khan@ucalgary.ca

Sabit is a second year Master of Engineering student in the Electrical and Computer Engineering program. After recently moving to Canada, he has taken an interest in travelling the mountains and lakes around Alberta, and also cooking different cuisines of food in his spare time.

Hailing from a country where the culture of having Unions or Labor Committees is not very commonplace, Sabit wanted to explore this opportunity to give back to the student community and ensure safe and fair employment environments for all.

Joshuah Lockett-Harris

Joshuah Lockett-Harris
Vice Chair Outreach
PhD Candidate in Anthropology & Archaelogy
joshuah.lockett@ucalgary.ca

Joshuah is a PhD candidate in the Anthropology and Archaeology Department, who works in southern Mexico studying the development and generational reformulation of ancient Maya socio-political complexity through communal architectural spaces. In addition to his studies, he has spent the last decade as a labour activist in postsecondary education and private sector archaeology in Ontario and now Alberta. Through his personal experiences and the influence of his upbringing, Josh feels strongly about the role of unions in protecting the rights of workers and the importance of involvement and service. When not defending labour rights or ironically trying to be Indiana Jones, he loves spending time with family and friends, having deep conversations and playing with his niece and nephew.

Joshuah joined the Graduate Labour Union as Vice-Chair Outreach because despite all his other responsibilities, he felt the need to serve and aid his fellow academically employed graduate students. As AEGS, we find ourselves in a double bind where our immediate superiors are often both supervisors and bosses. Negotiating this positionality is challenging at the best of times, daunting at others, and debilitating at its worst. Joshuah first joined the Graduate Labour Union as a steward in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology to use his experiences to help others negotiate this positionality. When the opportunity arose to contribute more broadly across the university community as the Vice-Chair Outreach, he once again felt the call to action. Through this position, he aims to forge greater integration and solidarity of academically employed graduate students from across the University of Calgary. We want to do this first through strengthening the steward program so that all AEGS have easy access to a trusted advocate that is familiar to them and familiar with their departmental environment. Ultimately, we want to get all AEGS involved in some fashion or another, whether it be responding to our surveys, attending an event, volunteering your time or simply being an ally when we our colleagues may need one. We at the Graduate Labour Union stand in solidarity with you; we ask each of you to stand with us as well.
