About Labour Relations Committee

The Labour Relations Committee (LRC), chaired by the GSA AVP Labour, exists to represent, support, and educate Academically Employed Graduate Students at the University of Calgary. This includes but is not limited to collective agreement negotiations, the handling of disputes with employers, and advocating for a high standard of graduate student employment. lrc.gsa@ucalgary.ca

    This is an introductory full day workshop. Learn about labor history and how we got to where we are with union work in Canada, what it means to represent and be represented by a union, an overview of collective bargaining and grievances and much more. This workshop is 6 hours, however, you will be compensated for your time and there are PRIZES!

    Keira grew up in Hamilton, Ontario and moved to BC in 2009 to complete a Master's degree in Mathematics at UBC.  She taught math at colleges in the Lower Mainland for nearly a decade before moving to Calgary to pursue a Ph.D. in Pure Mathematics at UCalgary.  Growing up, Keira's father was a member of United Steelworkers and she experienced the strength and sacrifices of collective bargaining first-hand from various strikes and lockouts throughout her childhood. Labour rights and protections were a regular point of discussion in her household and she is extremely passionate about defending them.

    In her spare time, Keira enjoys jigsaw puzzles, videogames, ice hockey, and coddling her 17 year-old cat.

    Masume is a Ph.D. student in Geomatics Engineering. Her research is focused on flexural isostasy and quantitative modelling of the Earth using inversion methods. Masume first came to Calgary in 2016 to complete a master’s degree in Geomatics Engineering at UCalgary. In her spare time, Masume likes to read, do yoga, or go on hikes.

    Brittany is a 1st year Ph.D. student in Experimental Social Psychology, researching mental health and the stigma around mental illnesses. She completed degrees in both Psychology (M.Sc., B.A.) and Mathematics (B.Sc.) at UCalgary, and has been a student and/or staff here since 2012! When she isn’t working on academics, she likes to go on little hikes with her family (a partner Adam and their rescue dog Mickey), cook and bake gluten-free (she is celiac!), and listen to true crime podcasts.

    Jenise grew up in Edmonton and moved to Nanaimo to pursue her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Vancouver Island University. After working for six years as a Registered Nurse in public and sexual health, Jenise returned to school and is currently pursuing a Master of Nursing with research focused on chronic pain in young women. Jenise is also an avid outdoor adventurer and Iyengar yoga enthusiast.

    Anna is a first year Ph.D. student in Organic Chemistry. She joined the Ling Research Group in 2017 as an undergraduate summer student, and has been researching the synthesis of antibacterial carbohydrate-based vaccines ever since. She also recently took on a project related to COVID-19 antiviral synthesis and is very excited to be part of this global research effort. When she is not in the lab, Anna likes to spend her time conquering new summits in the Rockies, preferably with her dog Meadow at her side.

    Jamie is a 2nd year PhD student in Educational Research at the Werklund School of Education. His research is focussed on the experiences of LGBTQ2S+ teachers navigating heteroprofessionalism. He has been a classroom teacher for 10 years and has been involved with The Alberta Teachers’ Association at both the local and provincial levels for half of his career. During that time, he sat at the bargaining table as a member of the Negotiating Subcommittee of his ATA Local. Outside of school, he likes to spend time with his partner and their two cats.

    Russell is a graduate student-worker getting their MSc in the Department of Geography, studying urban accessibility via crowdsourcing. Russell grew up in BC and attended Simon Fraser University to earn a major/minor in Geography and Health Sciences. While they were at SFU, Russell saw firsthand the power of organized labour in achieving democracy in the workplace and wants to ensure everyone feels empowered to make their voices heard at work, and in their communities. 

    In their spare time, Russell loves learning about mythology, gaming with friends, cooking for their friends, and baking their mom’s bread recipes.

    The Labour Relations Committee is looking for representatives in the following faculties: the Faculty of  Science and Schulich School of Engineering.

    Labour Relations Committee members play an active role in deciding how the GSA handles labour issues surrounding our Collective Agreement with the University of Calgary. This includes workforce outreach and mobilization initiatives, grievance handling, and bargaining.  No experience is necessary; however all members must be an Academically Employed Graduate Student (must have held a GA(R), GA(T), or GA(NT) in the last 12 months).

    Time Commitment: Approximately one meeting per month (1-1.5 hours + 1 hour preparation). In addition, members are encouraged to host outreach sessions to their faculty, subject to their availability.

    Application: Please send a statement of interest (max. 300 words) and proof of a recent Graduate Assistantship (paystub, etc.) to lrc.gsa@ucalgary.ca

    Ph.D. Candidate in Civil Engineering

    Jacob is a 3rd year Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Civil Engineering studying operations and planning of delivery drones and robots. He is an international student from Scotland who first came to Calgary in 2016 during an undergraduate exchange before completing his Masters back home and returning to the true north for his Ph.D. in 2018. One day he hopes to be on that coveted tenure track as he enjoys teaching; he has avidly taken the both the SAGES and Taylor Institute teaching and learning courses. Given COVID-19, most of his free time is spent on video games or painting.
