Paid Mitacs opportunities for graduate students – June 2021

Mitacs is a national not-for-profit whose mandate is to help academic researchers build collaborative research projects with eligible not-for-profits and Canadian companies, which provide valuable research training internships for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. These internships are then co-funded through Mitacs and the external partner. The Calgary Mitacs team is pleased to share the following paid Mitacs opportunities with you and any grad students who might be interested in applying. Please share widely. (Grad Program Coordinators: You are also welcome to copy and paste specific positions that are a better fit for your department or faculty and add them to your own newsletters or templates.)

READ THIS SECTION FIRST: A few IMPORTANT points to note

  • All Mitacs internships are PAID. Funding for these positions starts at $10,000 for 4-6 months, and most are higher. (e.g. Post-docs are eligible for up to $60,000 in funding/year)
  • Mitacs internships are open to applicants from ALL disciplines
  • All Mitacs interns MUST be current graduate students or postdoctoral fellows, and 

o   You MUST maintain your official student or postdoc status until past the end of the internship. (No recent grads, unfortunately.)

o   In order to apply as a postdoctoral fellow, you must have graduated from your PhD within the past 5 years.

  • Company:   Livestock Water Recycling
  • Brief project description: Using organic chemistry to solve one of the world’s biggest environmental problems: cleaning livestock waste water.
  • Academic Level: Postdoc 
  • Estimated Length: 12 months

  • Desired skills / expertise:   Ph.D. in organic chemistry or polymer chemistry. Extensive experience in synthetic organic chemistry. Expertise in characterization methods of organics.

  • Company:   Simply Embedded
  • Brief project description: Simply Embedded is an engineering consulting firm specializing in embedded systems design. We already have a solution in development using a stationary antenna array however the goal of this project is to take bluetooth low energy angle of arrival (BLE AoA) direction finding to the next level. The current antenna array is much larger than the beacon devices and needs to be scaled down to an IOT (internet of things)  wearable size. The algorithms for analyzing the IQ data to determine the AoA need to be developed for the determined antenna design, and then a higher level algorithm needs to be developed to be able to locate all the moving beacons using a relational model.

  • Brief project description:  What are the most effective mental health and addictions interventions and supports for youths between the ages of 11 to 18 years?

  • Brief project description:   The main goal of this project is to work with the business development team and update an existing proprietary narrow vein database.  Work will entail researching geological information from existing and prior vein deposits globally and with a focus in Canada (Abitibi region).  Data collection will entail public sources, company websites, geological publications and NI43-101 reports.  Orebody characteristics such as strike, dip, grade and depth from surface will be collected and augmented to existing global database.
