Paid Mitacs opportunities for graduate students – July 2021

Mitacs is a national not-for-profit whose mandate is to help academic researchers build collaborative research projects with eligible not-for-profits and Canadian companies, which provide valuable research training internships for graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. These internships are then co-funded through Mitacs and the external partner.  

The Calgary Mitacs team is pleased to share the following paid Mitacs opportunities with you and any grad students who might be interested in applying. Please share widely. (Grad Program Coordinators: You are also welcome to copy and paste specific positions that are a better fit for your department or faculty and add them to your own newsletters or templates.) 

Important Announcements and Updates: 

  • Our eligibility is expanding! Undergraduate students are now also eligible to apply for Mitacs programs (which means opportunities are going to move even more quickly, so don’t delay if you see something that you want to apply for!) 
  • Another area of new eligibility is that we can now work with Municipalities and Hospitals as partner organizations on Mitacs projects (so if you have a contact at a City or Hospital, ask them if they might be interested in using our funding to hire you for a research project with them!) 
  • Indigenous Pathways is now open! This means that any project with an indigenous intern, an indigenous-owned company, or a not-for-profit with an Indigenous mandate is eligible to participate in our programs at a 25% discount! Email Sarah, Annie, or Angelo for details.
  • SME Discount – (Available while quantities last!) Any new project with a business or eligible not-for-profit, with under 500 employees is eligible for a reduced $ contribution for the first 4-6 months of each intern. Email Sarah, Annie, or Angelo for details.
  • Special Funding Call #1: Mental Health Research Canada FULLY FUNDED Mitacs internships for Masters students ONLY. Application deadline: August 30, 2021. The successful applicants will be awarded $15,000 for a four- or six-month term; funds will be paid directly to the student’s academic institution and held by the student’s supervisor. READ THIS SECTION FIRST: A few IMPORTANT points to note 

  • All Mitacs internships are PAID. Funding for these positions starts at a minimum of $10,000 per 4-6 month period, and most are higher. (e.g. Post-docs are eligible for up to $60,000 in funding/year) 
  • Mitacs internships are open to applicants from ALL disciplines 
  • All Mitacs interns MUST be current students or postdoctoral fellows, and  
    • You MUST maintain your official student or postdoc status until past the end of the internship. (No recent grads for now, but watch this space…) 
    • In order to apply as a postdoctoral fellow, you must have graduated from your PhD within the past 5 years.

  • Brief project description: Simply Embedded is an engineering consulting firm specializing in embedded systems design. We already have a solution in development using a stationary antenna array however the goal of this project is to take bluetooth low energy angle of arrival (BLE AoA) direction finding to the next level. The current antenna array is much larger than the beacon devices and needs to be scaled down to an IOT (internet of things)  wearable size. The algorithms for analyzing the IQ data to determine the AoA need to be developed for the determined antenna design, and then a higher level algorithm needs to be developed to be able to locate all the moving beacons using a relational model.

  • Brief project description: Centre for Commercialization of Regenerative Medicine (CCRM) has just posted a complex project ON-501 focusing on 6 core themes (below).  
    • iPSC and Gene Editing – iPSC (induced pluripotent stem cells) and gene editing research focuses on reprograming a variety of cell lines for specific functions.  
    • Media and Cell Development – Research in media formulations focuses on optimizing conditions for cell development and growth. This research is supported by capabilities in liquid handling robotics and mass spectrometry analytics.  The goal will be media, cell products or cell products that support analytics. 
    • Non-Viral Genetic Transfer – Research in genetic, non-viral transfer for cells focuses on systems that can deliver novel genetic therapies to host cells via a variety of techniques.

  • Desired skills / expertise:  Candidates should hold a PhD in computer science, biomedical engineering, mathematics, or an associated program, with a track record of excellence and publications in medical image processing and deep learning. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing advanced image processing methods using deep learning techniques for ultrasound imaging for computer-aided diagnosis support and clinically-oriented research. The postdoctoral fellow will also be expected to take a lead on manuscript writing and preparation, presentation of scientific material at national and international meetings, support of grant applications, and mentoring junior lab members. The successful candidate will be located in the MiDATA lab space at the University of Toronto (https://www.tyrrell4innovation.ca/). The postdoctoral fellow will be surpervised by Prof Pascal Tyrrell at the University of Toronto. Pascal is the Director of Data Science and Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Imaging with cross appointments to the Department of Statisitical Sciences and the Institute of Medical Science.
