Announcement of the new Executive Director

From Brit Paris, GSA President 2017-2019

April 15, 2019

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Danielle Abbott as the Executive Director of the UCalgary Graduate Students’ Association, effective April 15, 2019. As the Executive Director of the GSA, Danielle will provide guidance and operational leadership for the GSA staff and executive, aimed at improving the current services and programs that support and empower our graduate students.

Danielle joined the GSA as the Accounting Manager in 2014 and moved into the role of the Director of Finance and Operations in 2017. During the past five years, Danielle has developed a strong understanding of the GSA’s operations, overseeing finances, human resources, and the Last Defence Lounge (LDL). She also served as the Interim Executive Director while the GSA conducted a thorough Executive Director search process. Prior to her work with the GSA, Danielle had made significant contributions to Shelter Nova Scotia as the Director of Finance.

Danielle earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Dalhousie University and is currently pursuing a Master of Public Administration Management through Dalhousie University’s Centre for Advanced Management Education. As a master’s student, Danielle is in tune with the unique needs of our graduate student members. Danielle looks forward to building meaningful relationships with our members and stakeholders and improving the GSA’s organizational sustainability.

This appointment coincides with another important milestone for the organization as we will introduce the 2019-2022 Strategic Plan at the end of April 2019. As an active participant in the strategic planning process, Danielle is well-prepared to champion our strategic goals and guide the organization to excellence.

The GSA would like to thank our Advisory Search Committee for their hard work and significant contributions to this process. They are: Mohammad Mansouri (GSA Board of Directors representative), Chris Schneider (LDL representative), Jaclyn Carter (GSA Senior Leadership Team representative), Lina Girgis (GSA staff representative), and Shawn Brackett (GSA Graduate Representative Council representative). I would also like to thank the GSA Board of Directors for their contributions and support in the process including the final decision making stages. They are: Elena Favaro (VP Academic), Marcela Coelho Lopes (VP External), Mina Iskander (VP Student Life), and Mohammad Mansouri (VP Finance and Services).

Please join me in congratulating Danielle on her appointment.
