The Campus Trust Extended Health and Dental Benefit Plan
Run by Students, For Students
The GSA plan is a unique student-run health and dental plan. Managed by the Campus Trust (a board made up of students), the plan is both comprehensive and competitively priced. This one year plan’s start date is based on the date (month) you first registered with the U of C as a graduate student. It does not replace the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) which is run by the province of Alberta. You must be registered with a Canadian provincial health care plan (e.g. AHCIP, Ontario Health Insurance Plan) to be receiving benefits through the GSA plan.
Who is Included?
All students registered as full or part-time graduate students in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the Faculty of Environmental design, and those in Post-Degree Continuous Learning programs are active members eligible for the plan. All full-time graduate students are automatically enrolled in the plan each year, except for CAAP, distance education program and EMBA students.
What if I'm a Part-time Student?
Part-time students and those not presently enrolled in the GSA plan can purchase coverage (opt-in) each year they are an active GSA member. Part-time students must opt-in by their annual student registration/fee deadline.
For example, if you are September registrant (this means you are assessed for your general fees every September), then you must opt-in by the September fee deadline.
What About Family Coverage? How Do I Opt My Family In?
Any graduate student actively enrolled in the GSA plan can purchase health and dental coverage for their families each year they are registered as students at the U of C. Again, this opt-in option must be purchased prior to your student registration/fee deadline. This additional coverage is available throughout the academic year, without proration of premium fees or benefits. To apply for family coverage (opt-in), go to the Health and Dental link on the GSA website (www.gsa.ucalgary.ca). Alternately, you can visit the GSA office (350 MSC).
What If I Opted Out of the Plan Only to Lose My Alternative Coverage?
Am I Allowed to Opt Back In?
Students, who have opted to waive their entitlement to participate in the Benefit Plan (opted-out), may apply, in writing, to the GSA for einstatement of that entitlement (opting-in), provided one of the events, described below, has occurred:
- The student is no longer entitled to the alternate coverage used to opt-out of the plan, in which case proof of the loss of such entitlement may be required by the GSA. The student must apply to the GSA within 30 days of losing their alternative coverage.
- The student, who was originally not eligible for coverage, became eligible by virtue of their course or course load.
The student's application for reinstatement must be accompanied be received by way of email, facsimile or in person at the GSA office.
What Is My Campus Trust Certificate Number? How Do I Get It?
The Campus Trust Certificate Number is the number your pharmacist and dentist use to process claims on the spot. This means you only pay the amount not covered by the plan. Please note, there is a one month blackout period for this service each year during your annual registration month. During this time, or any other, you still can process your claims online by going to the Health and Dental link on the GSA website (www.gsa.ucalgary.ca). Alternatively, they can be mailed in or dropped off to the GSA office (350 MSC). To obtain your Campus Trust Certificate Number, click here.
